Our History

The rise Of The BIA

The 'where' behind our organization

Reflect Cultural Roots

The origins of Calgary's Chinatown date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the arrival of Chinese immigrants primarily from the Guangdong province.

These pioneers established a community amidst challenging circumstances, creating a vibrant enclave that became the heart of Chinese culture in the city.

We honor our past by preserving and sharing the unique traditions, stories, and contributions of our forebears, ensuring that the soul of Chinatown continues to resonate through its streets and activities.

Inspire Community Connection

Throughout the 1900s, Calgary's Chinese community faced numerous hurdles, including the discriminatory Head Tax and social exclusion.

Despite these challenges, the community not only endured but also fostered strong connections amongst its members and with the broader Calgary populace. This era of overcoming adversity and building communal bonds is a testament to Chinatown's spirit of unity and resilience.

We draw inspiration from this history, committing to strengthen these connections and foster a sense of belonging and solidarity within the community.

Support Local Prosperity

Post-World War II, changes in Canadian immigration policies led to a new wave of Chinese immigrants. This period marked a significant transition for Chinatown, evolving from a bachelor society to a family-oriented community.

The growth of Chinatown during this era, with the flourishing of businesses and cultural institutions, mirrors the success of its local entrepreneurs.

This principle emphasizes our commitment to nurturing the economic vitality of Chinatown, supporting local businesses, and ensuring a thriving, prosperous community that benefits all its members.

Embrace Evolution and Inclusivity

In recent decades, Chinatown has faced and adapted to various challenges, including urban development pressures and the need for heritage preservation.

This modern chapter of its history is characterized by a continual evolution, embracing diverse influences while maintaining its unique identity.

This principle underscores our dedication to inclusivity and openness to new ideas and people, promoting a Chinatown that is dynamic, adaptive, and welcoming to all.
